His interest in art began in childhood, and at the age of twelve he apprenticed with artist David Kvaebeak. He later studied art, form and color in high school, which further developed his understanding of composition, harmonies and color play.
Skinningsrud works mainly with acrylic painting, and describes painting as a space for calm and concentration – a place where thoughts, feelings and impulses are allowed to take shape intuitively through color and structure. Inspiration is often drawn from art history and from artists who are no longer with us, while the expression bears traces of a personal and modern idiom.
In addition to visual art, he is also active as a musician and songwriter, with guitar and vocals as his main instruments. This musical approach can often be traced in the paintings, where rhythm, dynamics and mood play a central role. The work continuously alternates between music and painting – two forms of expression that for Skinningsrud seem to be part of the same creative conversation.
Artistry is driven by an inner necessity rather than a fixed defined goal; a continuous exploration of harmony, contrasts and human experience.
